Global Unit Plan
Here is an example of the lesson plan I developed to support Global Education in the classroom. It was built around a unit I already taught, required by standards, and incorporating the global education was easy. It's a 6th grade science lesson in the ecology unit I teach and is focused around the driving question, "What Do We Change?"

National Geographic for Kids
Whenever our study of the environment introduces new animals or geography, students explore using this site. It's a great way for them to see and explore on their own.

United Nations Sustainable Development
Countries from around the world developed 17 goals for sustainability. This site has great resources for students and teachers to help better the world!

NEA Global
Learning Fellowship
The NEA Foundation recognizes that in order for students to prepare for the global age, the educator must first be equipped with the knowledge, skills and disposition needed to teach in the global age. By participating in the Global Learning Fellowship program, educators have an opportunity to lead the profession by acquiring the necessary skills to integrate global competence into their daily classroom instruction, advance pedagogy in their school/district, prepare students to thrive in the flattened global age, and thus contribute to the closing of the global achievement gap.

Global Gateway for Teachers
My introduction to global education started with my student teaching in Mitcham, Australia! Indiana University offers a great cultural immersion program that allows you to teach overseas, in a Navajo reservation, and an urban setting. It was a phenomenal experience!

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis
The World's Largest children's museum! It has permanent and rotating galleries that offer cultural experiences from around the world. My current favorite is Stories from Our Community. It focuses on storytelling and how it is shared through history. Partner that with Write Our World and your local story goes international!

What can global education look like in the typical classroom?
I've started creating a unit plan on environmental education using the guiding question "What do we change?"
Using the Understanding by Design framework and 4 Global Competencies, students will:
How to teach globally with local standards?
I've taken one 6th grade Indiana Science Standard and incorporated the global competencies into it. Small, little steps can help you make giant gains.

LST.7: Research
I've started creating a unit plan on environmental education using the guiding question "What do we change?"
Using the Understanding by Design framework and 4 Global Competencies, students will:
- Investigate the World by looking at how humans impact the earth locally and globally
- Consider Multiple Perspectives by looking at how humans are helped and hurt by their impact
- Communicate Ideas by sharing their findings
- Take Action by acting upon their findings

LST.7: Research
- 6-8.LST.7.1: Conduct short research assignments and tasks to answer a question
- (including a self- generated question), or test a hypothesis, drawing on
- several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that
- allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
- Students will generate researchable questions with no right or wrong answers.
- Students will use a variety of media sources and weigh relevant evidence.
- Students will develop arguments based on researched evidence and draw defensible conclusions.
- Science - Students will research an animal population change and consider the impacts at the local and global level. (Investigating the World)
- Science - Students will create food webs and, using a variety of resources, consider human behavior and the impacts on those webs. (Investigating the World)
- Science - Students will recognize their own impact and identify positive and negative influences they have on the environment (Recognizing Perspectives)
- Students will be able to explain human impact on local and global animal population changes.
- Students will be able to create campaigns that promote the protection, restoration, and sustainable impact on the environment.
- A practice of science is posing and refining questions that lead to descriptions and explanations of how the natural and designed world(s) work and these questions can be scientifically tested. Engineering questions clarify problems to determine criteria for possible solutions and identify constraints to solve problems about the designed world.
- Students will identify and create action to improve conditions and solve problems.
- Students will test solutions, assess options and plan action based on evidence.
- Students will identify technology constraints that have limited problem solving and offer solutions.
- Students will identify technology available to them and compare that with the technology available in the area of study (Recognizing Perspectives)
- Students will problem solve to identify solutions to human interaction on the environment (Take Action)
- Students will be able to create arguments for better technology that will help solve problems.
- Students will be able to identify obstacles for such technology and offer appropriate alternatives.
- Students will be able to discuss how said technology or alternatives will help improve conditions.
